5 Hacks To Declutter Your Home This Week
A decluttered home is calming, relaxing and keeps you focused on the people (not things) in your home.
But organising your home takes time and intentionality. You won’t drift into it naturally. Here are 5 decluttering tips to create ‘order out of chaos’ in your home:
#1 START SMALL
Before you pull out everything in a big mess, switch to 5 minute mini blocks of time to declutter and organise. Instead of tackling a whole room at once, break it down to one shelf, draw or square metre at a time.
#2 CREATE A CHECKLIST
By writing down a plan, you’re more likely to follow through and get everything done. Create a decluttering checklist and tick off items as you go. You can break it down by item or by room in the house, eg:
Kitchen
Bathroom
Living room
Walk-in robe
Garage
Or break it down by item categories:
Kitchen glassware
Kitchen appliances
Mugs
Towels
Magazines/newspapers
DVD’s/CDs
Hair accessories
Office stationery
and so on…
#3 DONATE CLOTHES YOU HARDLY WEAR
Here’s a trick to know: hang all your clothes with hangers in the reverse direction. After wearing an item, face the hanger in the correct direction. Donate the clothes you never wore after a few months.
#4 USE THE 3-BOX METHOD
Get three boxes and label them “Keep”, “Give-away” and “Trash”. Use these boxes as filters for cleaning each room. At the end of the process, you can reorganise the “Keep” box back into place, and remove the other two.
#5 GET HELP FROM A FRIEND
Having a second person’s opinion can help you put things into perspective. Invite a close friend of family member to join you. If you defend the item and want to keep it, your friend has to agree with your reason. If they don’t agree, it’s time to get rid of it!
